THE HISTORY OF TWININGS
The Twining family originally came from Gloucestershire, and many were professionally active as weavers and millers. Economic decline caused members of the Twining family to move to London in 1684.
One of them was nine-year-old Thomas Twining, who later became the founder of the Twinings tea empire. To be able to settle in London as an entrepreneur, Thomas first worked as a weaver. Later for a wealthy merchant, where he learned about tea. He became fascinated by the possibilities that tea could offer.
Thomas bought a coffee house in London and started his own. Coffee houses were becoming extremely popular in Europe and thus also in England. To be able to distinguish himself in the wide range of more than 2000 coffee houses in London, he introduced tea on the menu and also started selling loose tea.
Because coffee houses were a strict men's affair - women were not allowed in - Thomas Twining bought the building next to his coffee house and set it up as a shop, where he could offer tea for sale. This way he could reach the female clientele, among whom tea became a real hype in London.
To this day, Twinings is located at the place where Thomas Twining started.
