Traditional Italian coffee maker

The moka pot has been a popular way to make an intense cup of coffee at home for decades. This iconic espresso pot uses steam pressure to force hot water through the ground coffee. The result is a bold, aromatic coffee reminiscent of espresso, but with its own distinctive character.

Which coffee beans are best for a moka pot?

For an espresso pot, coffee beans with a full body and rich aroma are often the best choice. Flavours of chocolate, nuts, caramel and subtle spiciness come through beautifully. A medium to medium-dark roast provides a lovely balance between intensity and sweetness without making the coffee too bitter.

The grind is also important. For a moka pot, use a grind that is finer than for filter coffee, but slightly coarser than a classic espresso. This allows the water to flow evenly through the coffee, creating a full, balanced flavour.

Within the Van Hilst Koffie en Thee range, our Premium Blends are particularly well suited to this brewing method. These carefully crafted blends deliver a rich flavour experience and a pleasant body. Single Origin coffee lovers can also achieve surprising results with a moka pot, beautifully preserving the distinctive characteristics of the coffee's origin.

An espresso pot may require a little more attention than a fully automatic machine, but it rewards you with an authentic coffee experience. The characteristic gurgling, the aroma of freshly brewed coffee and the rich flavour make every preparation a little Italian coffee moment.

With freshly roasted coffee beans from Van Hilst Koffie en Thee, you get the best out of your moka pot. Discover our carefully selected coffees and enjoy a bold, aromatic cup of coffee with a truly Italian character every day.
