Perfectly balanced

These coffee beans are really great. They possess a perfect balance between fruity notes and wild aromas. An aromatic coffee with notes of chocolate, sweet and floral aftertaste. This Direct Trade coffee is a 100% arabica coffee.

The origin of coffee

Coffee - and its energizing effect - was probably discovered about 1500 years ago in Ethiopia. The word coffee comes from the Ethiopian town of Kaffa. A goatherd would have seen his goats become extremely energetic by eating coffee berries. Monks would then have made a drink from berries with a stimulating effect.

Coffee bushes were brought from Ethiopia to Yemen where coffee production was cultivated until drinking coffee became popular in Europe in the 17th century. Elsewhere in the world (Java) then new coffee areas emerged. So Ethiopia is the oldest coffee region in the world. And a lot of coffee is still grown. Ethiopia ranks fifth among the world's coffee-producing countries. Coffee is the main export product.

Our Direct Trade Ethiopian coffee comes from Sidamo, formerly a southern province in Ethiopia. The Suke Quto Producers Association is located in the Guji zone, one of the Oromia regions in the south of Ethiopia, not too far from the Kenyan border. Originally, the plantation with its washing station and dry mill was about 5 hectares in size. But after a major forest fire, farm manager Tesfaye Bekele took the initiative to distribute coffee and shade tree seeds to farmers around the plantation to replant together. His love for nature has ensured that the local community has a steady income.
