A beautiful Darjeeling, fresh with an aromatic character. The spring harvest gives this young tea a spicy, aromatic and fresh taste. From the youngest first harvest.

Traditionally, Darjeeling is not a breakfast tea but more of a tea that you use between meals. Without milk and without sugar. That in contrast to eg Assam and Ceylon tea.

Darjeeling is a real concept for many tea lovers. Darjeeling teas are among the best in the world. Darjeeling is known for its fine and aromatic taste. Top quality Darjeeling grows at about 1500 meters altitude. The cool nights and intensive sunlight provide this tea with exactly the climate it needs.

The youngest first pick is the first tea picked in the season after the winter. The tea bush starts to grow slowly in the cool spring air and the slow growing leaves and leaf buds have the highest intensity in taste and smell.

Darjeeling Tukdah is a perfect accompaniment to sweet dishes. The astringent Darjeeling dissolves the fats of the cake, enhancing the taste. The fruity aromas of the tea and the candied fruit in the cake reinforce each other. This Zeeland cookie is from Bakkerij Vader in Oostkapelle.

Thee uit Darjeeling

In het noord-oosten van India ligt in de Inidase staat West-Bengalen, het district Darjeeling met de gelijknamige hoofdstad. Het grenst o.a. aan Nepal in het westen, Bangladesh in het zuid-oosten en aan de autonome Indiase staat Sikkim in het noorden.

Darjeeling ligt tegen de zuidhellingen van de Himalaya. De bergen van het noorden zijn bebost. In het zuiden bevinden zich heuvels met theeplantages.

Champagne

Thee uit Darjeeling wordt van oudsher de Champagne onder de theeën genoemd. Dat is vooral een prestigieuze kwestie.
Thee uit deze hoog gelegen theeplantages is vaak van hoge kwaliteit. Het koele klimaat in het voorjaar zorgt ervoor dat de theestruik langzaam groeit en dat geeft met name de eerste pluk een bijzonder karakter.

Royal First Flush

De allereerste pluk wordt als een soort Beaujoulais Primeur, of eerste haring of kreeft, per vliegtuig naar Europa gebracht om de start van het theeseizoen te vieren. Deze Royal First Flush verschilt per theetuin en is zeer aromatisch.

De tweede pluk vindt plaats in de zomer, wanneer het overdag warm is (20+) en de struiken meer produceren. En er is ook een derde plukseizoen, als de dagen weer wat korter worden. De eerste pluk uit Darjeeling is kwalitatief de beste en het meest gevraagd. De latere pluk is minder intensief van smaak maar is nog steeds heel goede thee.

Bladkwaliteit

Thee uit Darjeeling wordt geclassicificeerd met letters en soms een cijfer. Dat geldt overigens ook voor Assam en Ceylon thee en soms ook voor thee uit andere landen.

OP: Orange Pekoe - Lange puntige theeblaadjes.

FOP: Flowery Orange Pekoe - Thee die is gemaakt van 2 blaadjes en een bladknopje.

GFOP: Golden Flowery Orange Pekoe - Zoals FOP maar dan met goudkleurige punten van de bloemknoppen. Deze geven een meer verfijnde smaak.

TGFOP: Tippy Golden Flowery Orange Pekoe - Zoals GFOP maar met meer bladpuntjes.

FTGFOP: Finest Tippy Golden Flowery Orange Pekoe - Zoals TGFOP maar van een nog betere kwaliteit.

SFTGFOP: Special Finest Tippy Golden Flowery Orange Pekoe - Uitzonderlijk hoge kwaliteit thee. Royal First Flush haalt vaak deze categorie maar ook sommige andere Darjeelings.

B: Broken - Als er een B in de lettercombinatie staat, is het blad gebroken. Door de fijnere structuur trekt je thee sneller. Komt doorgaans voor bij thee uit Assam en Sri Lanka. Minder bij Darjeeling.
