Description

High-quality tea from the Nudwa plantation, in the Dibrugargh region, India. An exquisite, medium-weight Assam from the best picking (second flush), with many golden tips (Tippy, Golden).

In the cup, this tea has a dark coppery color. A nice balanced tea.

Classification

The letters TGFOP-1 stand for Tippy Golden Flowery Orange Pekoe First Grade . That is the classification of the tea. It says something about the quality and leaf types.

Orange Pekoe: The basis of the classification. This name has nothing to do with oranges. Orange seems to come from the VOC, which made a connection with the House of Orange. Pekoe is a Chinese term for tea leaves with downy hairs, which you only see on the leaves of the first harvest.
Orange Pekoe tea is picked from two leaves and a leaf bud.

Flowery: With a few leaf buds. Those are the golden leaves in the tea. And actually they are bath buttons (buds) that are picked before they really unfold the leaves. Leaf tips or buds have a sweet taste.

Golden: with more (golden) leaf tips.

Tippy: with many leaf tips. In comparison, GFOP contains fewer leaf tips than TGFOP.

First Grade: the best quality in this class.

Indian tea (Assam, Darjeeling) and Ceylon tea (from Sri Lanka) are classified in this way. Chinese tea sometimes, but usually not.
