Collection: Twinings Earl Grey

In 1813 Richard Twining, scion of the Twining family who put tea on the map in England and Europe, made a blend on behalf of the English Prime Minister Charles Grey, the 2nd Earl Grey, who had been given such a blend by a high official in imperial China. This Earl Gray tea and later also Twinings English Breakfast are the best known and most drunk blends of Twinings.

Earl Gray tea is made from black Chinese tea, enriched with Bergamot oil. The relationship with lemon and orange (Bergamot is a citrus fruit) means that this tea combines perfectly with lemon and orange. Sometimes grapefruit is also used. The English like to drink tea with milk, but Earl Gray traditionally with lemon (juice).

Originally from Asia, Bergamot is bitter and inedible. Most Bergamot today is grown in Calabria, Italy.
